BRUSSELS (Reuters) - US Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter said on Friday he expected to send Saudi Arabia and UAE special forces into Syria to help the opposition fighters in their battle against the organization of the Islamic state to restore the city of Raqqa.

Carter did not say - which has long sought greater participation of Arab Sunni allies in Syria- on the number of special forces, which is expected to be published by the two countries, nor when the implementation of it.

ولم يفصح كارتر - الذي طالما سعى إلى مشاركة أكبر من الحلفاء العرب السنة في سوريا- عن عدد القوات الخاصة الذي يتوقع أن تنشرها الدولتان ولا موعد تنفيذ ذلك.

لكنه أشار إلى أن تلك القوات سيكون لها دور كبير في استعادة السيطرة على الرقة معقل تنظيم الدولة الإسلامية.

وقال كارتر للصحفيين الذين يرافقونه في بروكسل "سنحاول أن نتيح الفرص والقوة وبخاصة للعرب السنة في سوريا الذين يريدون استعادة أراضيهم من داعش لا سيما الرقة."

وأدلى كارتر بتلك التصريحات بعد محادثات أجراها مع نظيريه الإماراتي والسعودي يومي الجمعة والخميس على التوالي.

وساعدت الضربات الجوية الروسية المستمرة منذ أربعة أشهر الرئيس السوري بشار الأسد على استعادة أراض من أيدي المعارضة المسلحة التي تقاتل القوات الحكومية مما أثار قلق دول الخليج الداعمة للمعارضة المسلحة.

وركزت السعودية جهودها العسكرية خلال العام الماضي على الصراع في اليمن الذي تقود فيه تحالفا أغلبه من قوات خليجية لمحاربة المقاتلين الحوثيين الذين يسيطرون على العاصمة صنعاء.

ويبدو أن السعودية توسع نطاق تركيزها العسكري. وقال كارتر يوم الخميس إن السعودية ملتزمة بتوسيع دورها في الحملة الجوية وتعهدت الإمارات أيضا باستئناف مشاركتها.
